Working with Young People in Uganda

Tillydrone Vision

2010  Visit

Looking  Forward

Group to Visit Uganda in February 2010

Plans are now at an advanced stage for a Group of people who are all involved with the Tillydrone Vision Project to visit with our friends in Uganda.  We leave from Aberdeen Airport and fly to Schipol Amsterdam with a couple of hours lay over there before flying on to Entebbe Uganda. We fly out of Aberdeen at 6am. and flights going to plan, we should arrive in Entebbe about 8:40pm local time.

We have arranged collection for the Airport at Entebbe and will spend the night at one of the local Hotels before being collected the next morning and once again experiencing the drive to Kamuli. It is a good road up until Jinja but from there on it gets a bit more scary, less tarmac and more of one continuous great big pothole that the Driver’s swing from side to side of the road to to do their best to hit.. So far it looks like there will be twelve of us making the trip and it really is a good mixture in the Group. We have representatives from Grampian Fire and Rescue, a Head Teacher and a deputy Head from our Local primary School. We will be accompanied by three Young Folks from Tillydrone who are being funded by Fairer Scotland Fund on the trip.  The Visit is part of a Personal Development Programme we are running. Kenny, who is our Session Clerk at Saint George’s Tillydrone Church, is accompanying us, as is des the Church Treasurer, so we should be all right. Making up the group will be Ross and Kenneth for whom this will be a return visit to meet up again with old friends.  We plan to hire a couple of Matatu Buses with the drivers for the duration of the stay in Uganda.  Most us hold a Driving Licence but I would never recommend driving in Uganda Matatu’s are the local  Bus or Taxi used by most of the local people as public transport. They are really quite comfortable but as you can see, sometimes they get to be a bit crowded.  Hiring Matatu and driver gives us more freedom to be able to get around and meet up with old and new friends. Whilst in Uganda we will be publishing a Daily Blog on-line so that  family and friends will be able to keep up with us. If you want to follow our journey and share some of the experience of the trip with us, please visit us here and add a bookmark tot he page: http://tillydronetravellers.blogspot.com/

A small word of caution is please do not be dismayed if we lose a few days updating the Blog. We will be dependent on the use of the Internet cafe to update and the electricity going off for days at a time does not help. No Electricity, No Internet, so please do try and be be patient with us.  More details of the Blog will available on the site before we leave for Uganda.
